Pass 1 Extraction
Purpose
This page documents the first extraction pass, where source material is reduced to discrete, verifiable facts without interpretation or synthesis. This layer exists to establish a defensible factual boundary before any contextual or semantic processing occurs.
In practice, this is the difference between copying what a document actually says and rewriting it to reflect what it seems to mean.
The intent is to capture only what is explicitly stated in the source while preserving direct traceability to the original material.
Scope
Includes identification of atomic facts, preservation of original wording where required, and association of each extracted item with its authoritative source. Excludes normalization, categorization, summarization, inference, semantic enrichment, and any contextual interpretation.
Constraints
- Only information explicitly present in the source material is eligible for extraction.
- Extracted facts are recorded without interpretation, generalization, or implied meaning.
- Each extracted item maintains a direct and inspectable reference to its originating source.
- Ambiguous, conditional, or qualified statements are preserved as such rather than resolved.
These constraints ensure that later layers operate on a stable factual substrate. Introducing interpretation at this layer collapses the separation between fact and context.
Notes
Pass 1 extraction defines the factual boundary of the system. Any inference, normalization, or contextual judgment introduced here compromises auditability and cannot consistently be isolated or reversed downstream.
